You don’t need to limit yourself just to those topics – you can also join groups and pages that aren’t directly related to your dissertation but still relevant because they have people who are interested in it too. For example, if you were looking at how sleep affects mental health instead of physical health, consider joining a group about psychology and one about medicine; you may find valuable information there that could help your research!

To get feedback from your audience, you can create an online survey. Many free and paid survey tools are available, such as SurveyMonkey, Google Forms, and Inquisit 5. There are several popular science-related subreddits, such as /r/askscience or /r/chemistry, with over half a million subscribers!
One thing that makes Reddit unique is that users can vote up or down on posts. This means if you ask a question about something specific that only interests a small group of people (like your research topic), you will probably bury it deep in the site’s pages along with all the other posts like “What do you think my chances are getting into grad school?”
However, if your question gets enough upvotes, it will rise through the ranks until it appears on its page at r/askreddit, where anyone can see it (and maybe comment).

For example, I’m writing my dissertation about the effects of social media on political participation. One of my topics is what happens when people are exposed to misinformation on the internet and how they respond to it. Use Pinterest to create a digital vision board to help you stay focused.
Pinterest is a great way to organize your thoughts and ideas. It’s also a place to collect information about the subject of your dissertation or anything else that interests you.
With all these functions, it’s easy to get lost in Pinterest until your research goes nowhere. To avoid this problem, create an idea board that brings everything together. You can use boards for each chapter or section of your dissertation or one large board if you have a general topic.
Once you have created the boards that best represent your research interests, start pinning images related to them using any of the following categories:
- Boards – This will show all boards currently on Pinterest
- Interests – Use this category if there are no specific categories (like #food) within which all of your pins fall into one another; often, users don’t need more than ten different interests per board.
