Experiential Writing Assignment

As an epicurean, I have always admired being a teacher of science. As O’Keefe (2020) asserts, the epicurean life demands that the pursuit of pleasure should come first in life; hence I was no different and sought it in the teaching field. After graduating, I was able to acquire the job of my dream. After a long wait, and just as Epicurus asserts that living a simple life brought all pleasures, I finally arrived at my place of employment, the city’s most prestigious high school. It was a joyous and happiest day in my life since I felt my prayers had been fulfilled of becoming a teacher. I arrived precisely on time, as specified in my placement letter. That day there was an annual general meeting where I met all my future students and their parents for the first time, which was an awe-inspiring experience for me. Everyone was happy and joyous on seeing me, which made me feel shy, but happiness overwhelmed me. The day moved on slowly; at first, I did not know what to do and what to say, but the welcome I received from teachers, parents, and students made me speak more and seem more talkative. I do not know where I got that courage to speak since it was my first day talking in front of a large crowd.

The teaching profession is a hard job, but it provides many opportunities to learn about yourself and pass on your ideas and perspectives to those younger than you. It’s full of pressures and uncomfortable times, making you feel good about yourself. The most important thing is that others consistently praise you for your accomplishments. The beginning is usually tricky, but then the beautiful moments arrive. As an epicurean, this experience was enough to teach me to be content with the simple things, such as seeing my students learn new ideas and perspectives that I passed down to them. Standing on the podium to speak to teachers, students and parents was a whole different experience for me, and true to say, it was worth it. This life would change my life outcomes hugely and noticeably. Being an epicurean, I firmly believe this life will help me gain more knowledge and hence be able to juggle my vain desires.
