Comparing Realism and Surrealism in Art
Realism is a 19th-century psychological and cultural development that influenced music, social life, science, and literature. In today’s society, realism is becoming increasingly prevalent in the media, particularly in television shows. In art, realism was a counter-movement to romanticism and emotionalism. Realism’s advocators strive to reflect things accurately, as they are. Surrealism, which means “beyond reality,” arose in the twentieth century due to realism’s supremacy. The scheme was popular in art, where it was used to create a more effective medium of expression. The surrealist activity grew out of the Dada events in Paris in the 1920s and spread extensively worldwide, influencing literature, film, and visual arts.
Simply catching a moment and sketching it as realistically as possible gets you closer to photography, although that, of course, requires more talents than photography. Surrealism, on the other hand, is more about expressing oneself. Surrealism strives to grasp and explain the world’s everyday reality in a mystic and odd way as if drawing the unconscious and tries to transport us to a different world of mysticism that our minds have never imagined before. Realism and Surrealism are two movements that have dominated televisions and fashions in recent years. Both attempt, albeit in different ways, to reflect reality. Televisions are dominated by realism, just as styles are dominated by Surrealism. Nearly a century ago, modernism threatened realism’s supremacy in literature and the fine arts, but realism continues to be the dominating narrative form in popular fiction, film, and television. This is why we see realism in TV shows and Surrealism in fashion (Joo Hee Seo 2015).
There are many reality shows on television. Realism is prevalent on television because characters in these shows choose their behavior and actions. These shows bring viewers closer to their favorite characters and allow them to enjoy a variety of emotions with them, such as fear, hope, and desire. (Novelli, 2015). Surrealism has been and will carry on to be an influential art form in fashion. Surrealists have a very artistic mind, and this type of work requires a lot of imagination. This is essential for a fashion designer as it is needed to bring out the best in their designs.
Eventually, in my opinion, Surrealism wins the battle of wills. Compared to realism, Surrealism is more attractive, expressive, intriguing, and magical. If you’re in a gallery of a fantastic realistic painter, for example, You look at the first painting, and the thing that comes to mind is how lovely and practical the picture is, and you quickly go on to the next artwork and so on. If you’re looking for a great surrealist painter, you’ll start with the first picture and the first impression. So the painting absorbs you to the hidden message of symbols, and you begin to think of what the painter thought when he painted that. You briefly feel the same way, so the painting feeds your imagination and way of understanding and interpreting the world and reality around you. That is why Surrealism seems better than realism.
